So it turns out our lease break wasn't for end of August 2007.

It's for end of August 2008!

Guess what that means? That's right, David gets to try to pull $1250 out of his ass to pay for a place that he doesn't even live in anymore! I'm OH so glad the owner of the building decided to NOT tell me about this when she called me, instead leaving a nasty voice-mail on jennifer's cell instead.

For future reference, "you just signed the lease extension, it doesn't really matter" does NOT have any legal holding. Even if you just extended the lease a day before deciding you want to break, you are STILL responsible for the unit until the end of the lease extension or until it gets leased out again, whichever comes first.

More amused and upset than nervous right now. Hopefully I'll be able to get this straightened out when I speak to the owner of the building again.

Also, how is it there are so many zomg special snowflake moods, but nothing as simple as "mad" or "upset"?

As Ursie said, I'd try finding a sublet first. At least that way there's a chance you won't have to find it all yourself, even if they turn out to be a flake halfway through the year.
