Viz' translation of Bleach uses this term to denote more than one "Arrancar", a type of being from said franchise.

"Arrancar" is also a Spanish word which means "to rip" or "to yank". Yet in Spanish, most - if not all - words that end in a consonant are pluralized by adding "-es" to the end, e.g., pulmones, corazones, refrigeradores, etc.

No real point to this post; just thought I'd bring to light my disconnect with this word, and how it's really tough to pronounce unless I force a non-Spanish accent when saying it :P

Calling out especially to my foreign friends. If anyone has a copy of Pokemon Diamond or Pearl that's originally in French, Spanish, Italian, German, or Japanese, let me know. I've recently learned that trading specific Pokemon in these languages to an English cart will unlock Pokedex entries for them in those languages, and so I'd love to trade for them to round out my collection. Thanks :D

Bad News: Payroll won't be able to get me a check advance until tomorrow at the earliest, Monday the latest.

Good News: I won ~$115 worth of groceries from Whole Foods for guessing the price of goods in a shopping cart. Yeah~

Also Good News: Fuck Yes.

That is all :D

The person who was supposed to put you in the payroll system didn't as an oversight. It is being done right now and we will try to get you a check cut tomorrow or Wednesday.

First, I apologize to Jen for seemingly mocking your accent. I couldn't help it; when you bust it out the way you do, I can't help but imitate it, and it's not to insult you, I promise <3

Second, if you have Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, you should pick up My Pokemon Ranch for the Wii. At $10, it's a cute little storage system for your game(s) (though you cannot use it to quickly transfer Pokemon from one DS cart to another). Jen and I have been greatly amused by it, and I've had some fun trying to fill it up.

Running late, I decided to walk to school today (45+ min on the T, ~30 min walking).

Big mistake, as it's hot as hell outside.

I made it fine (not to dehydrated), but I can already tell that I got burned a bit.

At least tomorrow I can wear shorts if I decide to walk again :|

I finally discovered this cartoon I saw as a lad based on a VERY vague description of the ending: Unico in the Island of Magic, and that's when I realized it was an anime.

So Jen and I dug around Wikipedia, and were quite surprised to find out how much anime comprised our childhood TV viewing. For example, of the 19 shows listed as "1980s Nickelodeon Cartoons", 6 of them were originally Japanese cartoons (and a good handful of the rest were originally from other countries as well).

Just something to throw out there. I mean, I'm sure a lot of us remember Voltron, Speed Racer, and Robotech, but Noozles? Maple Town? Little Koala? Oh yeah, we became weeaboos far quicker than we'd thought XD

So Jen and I decided to try our hand at some new things yesterday for dinner. You can check out each one by following the appropriate LJ cut:

a.k.a. I've passed my dissertation defense. The actual text needs a little tune-up, but it's in stellar condition otherwise.

Next stop: graduation, hooding, and bestowal of a particular title.

Me: "Ok, so Book 3, Volume 3 - which contains episodes that have yet to air in the US - comes out May 6. TIME TO GET ON THE BALL."

[ profile] jennifer: "Yeah, Nintendo, come..."

Both: "..." *laugh*

Greetings and salutations on another solar cycle, my fellow LJers. I've said this before, but I hope to really get back into making posts and, hell, keeping up with people a lot more this year. Hope everyone is doing well (I see from a lot of posts that we're starting off the year alright) and I look forward to a wonderful 2008 with all of you :D

So it seems MDR (Mass. Department of Revenue) didn't like that I claimed Jen as a dependent in 2004 (before we were married), and has decided to charge me the $53 I owe along with interest (even though they never bothered to get in touch with me until now...hmmm).

Looking through the website, it says I can't claim a non-relative as a dependent, which is odd because I could have SWORN that was the case in 2004. Feh.

Still need to call MDR to make sure that's the case, but it's quite a bummer none the less :/

1.) Why's Starscream your favorite Transformer?

I got into TF when it first started, and as you may or may not know, the bumbling henchman was the norm for bad guy teams. Starscream actually had the nerve to stand up to Megatron and say he though he'd be a better leader than him, even if all his "plans" for usurping him were woefully incompetent and he'd always get his ass kicked in the end.

Later versions of Starscream would always give him a very unique characterization for the series, so he's stuck around as my favorite.

2.) Do you think you'll ever go back into academia a few years down the road?

Ideally, yes, but for now my brain needs the break. Not only will it let me "heal" from 10+ years at BU, but it might serve to give me the inspiration needed to be able to come up with my own research questions. I've actually had fleeting thoughts here and there about med school, but nothing that I could really consider serious.

3.) What do you think's the hardest thing about working with your birds?

Particular to birds, not too much. I think what's always difficult is managing their homeostasis during surgery, since they're so small and therefore easily prone to expiring if you're not careful with the anesthesia. Aside from that, of course, is the typical neuroscience quibble of "damn, I hope I hit some neurons with this electrode", magnified even more due to the fact that they're implanted and so, if I've missed the target medial-laterally/anterior-posteriorly, I'm screwed :(

4.) What's one thing you miss about Miami that you can't get here?

5.) Why the bear? ;)

LOL JAPAN. But for the serious question, I dunno, lol. Ask Takeuchi XD

Saw this flier a few times at a nearby ATM:

Edited to not give any more press to a bunch of hypocrites )

Now, I have no problem if you're against BoA. Hell, I have no problem if you're actively trying to get them to improve their environmental impacts. I'd even be OK with someone coming up to me and trying to talk to me about it. This, though, borders on lunacy; not only do you piss people off by printing out a convincing-looking flier and make them think that the other ATMs are, indeed, broken, but you end up destroying the environment anyways by killing the trees needed to print these fliers.

Way to go, guys -_-

It's-a me!
