Well, after clearing up some snafus with who's a dependent of whom, I owe good old Uncle Sam $600. Fuck them; I hate having to give my money to a government that thinks the life of an undeveloped embryo is more valuable than that of a person on death row or in another country, and which thinks that abstinence is REALLY the most practical way to prevent pregnancies. But I digress; what pisses me off more is that I had to break down and ask my folks for the money YET AGAIN. I HATE that I'm so poor in real life, but not poor enough in the eyes of the IRS that I can't spare a few more dollars to fund this piece of shit, hypocritical set of morons we have in office right now (again, sorry for the ranting). Shit.

In other, much better news, happy birthday to my brother Gabriel. Apparently, he doesn't have a LiveJournal or any such thing, and as far as I know, he's really not interested in one, so this is the next best thing (aside from a phone-call, which I'll deliver in the evening).

Are we just getting freaking raped on withholding, or what? I've never owed money to the IRS, even with both of us earning significant money for the last two years.

I'm a bit worried about how things might go next year with Lisa's graduate assistantship, but I think the odds are that, once again, with our withholding rate, we'll probably end up with a refund again.

Of course, the idea of the federal government holding on to my money for 14 months at a time is probably enough to make thousands of Elephants go into a seizure...But I have no problem with the government tricking me into having a budget. :P

I don't know if I can get into the situation for myself on such an open forum, but I'm pretty sure my brother didn't declare himself as his own dependent, since he still lives at home, and that surely will have cost him money back in taxes.

What I can say, however, is that BU doesn't withhold enough of my money anymore; when I worked as a WS student, and later when I was funded by NIH, they withheld a lot more than they do now, and so I was able to get a little bit back.

Well, when I was living as a dependent under my parents, I still had almost (if not) zero tax liability, even with making ~$10K a year. Mebbe it's your weird old-people state. :P

*shrugs* Then I'm not sure what it is. I don't know the specifics of Mario's tax situation; it could very well be that our state has some strange tax institutions. I've never filed there, so I wouldn't know.
