Writer's Block: Repeat After Me...

[Error: unknown template qotd]

[livejournal.com profile] jennifer covered my last name well enough here

For those not aware, my first name is actually Gilberto, but I went by David in elementary school, then Gilberto in high school, David to my undergrad friends at BU, and Gilberto to my professors and fellow grad students. Yes, complicated, but anyways. In Spanish, it's phonetically "hilberto" (using English pronunciation of the letters) with the appropriate inflections, rolling of the r, and so on. In English it should be "Gilberto", with a hard "g" like "gate", but I get the occasional "Jilberto" too, or they'll recognize the English version of the name and call me "Gilbert" (WTF NO).

Best name mess-up ever: getting some award in high-school, the very-American vice principle principal somehow reads the name on the certificate - "Gilberto D. Grana" - as Gilberto d'Grana, and so I became Spanish and French for one day. Good times.

Um, no, you see, he called himself a principle. It was all...very...amusing? Yes, let's go with that.
