I feel REALLY stupid for asking this, as I'm sure the answer is right in front of me, but for the life of me I can't figure this out.

How do I properly code up nested arguments for an "if" statement?

Example: two variables "varA" and "varB" have been assigned their values. I want to check what those values are before acting on the rest of the script: specifically, "varA" should be some value "foo" AND "varB" should be neither "bar" or "baz".

Here's how I thought it should go:

if (varA == "foo") && ( (varB != "bar") || (varB != "baz") )
do something;

When I do this, though, it seems to ignore the "varB" stuff and only acts on all instances where "varA" is "foo". The problem must be in how I nest the "varB" conditions, since if I remove one of them and fix the parenthesis accordingly, it works for that value of "varB". I have no idea how to make it work for my needs, however.

Thanks for y'alls input.

EDIT: Figured it out. Boolean fail on my end >|

Battery is once again discharging WHILE the computer is plugged into the AC adapter. And I can't replace it.

gdgrana: (argh)
First, it was an issue with the battery on my Toshiba Satellite (A105 series) not charging. As in at all. That sucked.

The new battery charged, but when unplugged, it would linger at 100% for 5-15 minutes, then bust out with "You are at a critical battery level. Please save yo-" *zwip* Fantastico, but at least I can have a temporary charge while moving my computer around.

NOW, the computer is randomly deciding when it wants to draw power from the electrical outlet; at random times the connection to the AC adapter will cut out, depending on how the computer is positioned. This can either be an issue with the adapter itself or with the port it plugs into on the computer. I have no idea how to diagnose this without dropping the ~$100 I don't have on another adapter to test things -_-

Anyone know what I might be able to do relatively cheaply to try and pinpoint the issue(s)? I'm not opposed to cracking open the machine as it's past warranty already.

In lieu (is that right?) of an 'actual' update, I'll just post about some thoughts going through my head right now. Some are related to what I've been up to since my drunken post, others discuss missives about the future, and some may be philosophical ramblings about the, present. Yes.

- It's amazing how much you realize you missed music-on-the-go when you have access to a PMP (portable music/media player) again. Too much love for ThousandSunny.

- Linux is rather neat. I really want to learn how to work it so that I can do everything - from LiveJournal to Illustrator - in Terminal*

- Pokemon Diamond in 32 days. I'll preorder (just for the stylus :P) after I get paid at the end of the month.

- LITTLE KNOWN FACT! I typoed (typo'd?) "paid" above as "payed" before fixing it. Ugh -_-

- Currently writing a paper, something I haven't done in...well, ever, as it's rather different from the steps I took for my senior thesis. It's coming along alright, but I also have about 3 other duties waiting for me in the lab, one of which I need to attend to early tomorrow (8:45-ish early z_z)

- Wii Sports rawks. I was still sore last night from boxing training for about 25 minutes Saturday morning (I also played with Tennis, Baseball, and Bowling; I'll get to Golf one day >_>)

- Is it July yet? Fie and foo.

- Nintendo, please to be giving us a date for SSBB and MP:Corruption. Oh, and announce Mario Kart Wii already.

- Shelving the moving-to-Cambridgeport idea, since it seems the very notion of a nicely-sized 1 BR costing under 1300/month is laughable. Never fear! We're going to use some money that we've saved up in the coming months to get some goodies from iKea and make our current place a lot more liveable, i.e., not squatted by college kids.

- I ♥ my wife very much :D

- OTHER LITTLE KNOWN FACT! I can't find ♥ in OpenOffice Writer (I had to "steal" the one "above" "from" Wikipedia). If anyone can show me how to make ♥s in OO, I'll give you a graham cracker (crust?) next time we meet.

...AKA my new laptop ^^

I used my NIH yearly stipend to pick this badboy up: Toshiba A105-S4384, with 1GB RAM, 160ish GB diskspace, and other goodies that just blow my poor old STARSCREAM out of the water.

Reformatting my laptop's HD didn't do anything, so I'm guessing that it's an issue with the fan controller, wherein if the computer cannot detect that the fans are on (and in this case, they don't start for some reason), it won't boot up (as suggested by [ profile] cutriss). I don't know what to do about it, but from my cursory, inexperience inspection, it doesn't look like anything I can fix without having to purchase an new mobo. Looks like I'm left paying for an expensive paperweight. Oh well :/

Our cat loves our computers, as Jen may have attested before. She especially loves walking on the keyboards, a possible attempt to interface with the machine and thus get even more attention.

However, just 5 minutes ago, she broke the internet.

I was cutting and pasting a link to a GameFAQs message board when Rydia - as she does every once in a while - jumped onto the bed to get to the window sill. My computer was in the way of her path, though, so rather than walk around it, she walks OVER it, stares at the screen for a sec, then moves off and goes to the sill.

"Warning: Internet Explorer has caused such and such an error, and must be shut down. We apologize for the inconvenience."

That's all I have to say about that : )
